When It Comes to Trump and Musk, It's Important to Remember That They Never Suffer Negative Consequences For Their Actions Because NOBODY FUCKING CARES
The left has a poignantly pathetic belief in the fundamental goodness of the American people. Despite ample evidence to the contrary, the Democratic Party has held onto the conviction that we are fundamentally not racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or cruel and that when Donald Trump goes too far, his supporters will turn on him.
This sad delusion can be traced back to the waning days of the 2016 election. We were all convinced, understandably at the time, that being caught on tape grabbing about women by their genitalia would cost Trump the presidency or, at the very least, hurt him with female voters who presumably would be deeply offended by a man gushing, on record, “I’m automatically attracted to beautiful (women) — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”
We were wrong! We were somehow extremely wrong. The Access Hollywood leak didn’t cost Trump the presidency. In violent defiance of God’s will, Donald Trump was elected president in 2016. What Trump and his supporters successfully dismissed as harmless locker room talk, the kind every fifty-nine-year-old billionaire engages in constantly, didn’t even cost him white female voters, who voted for him over what would have been the first female President of the United States.
Trump was not wrong when he said that when you’re a star, you can do anything, up to and including grabbing women by the pussy.
More recently, a popular stand-up comedian named Tony Hinchcliffe made international news when, during a massive Trump rally at the Madison Square Garden, he jokingly compared Puerto Rico to a floating island of garbage.
THIS promised to hurt Trump’s campaign, right? It HAD to affect the way that Hispanics saw Trump and his campaign, even if the offensive joke was uttered by a stand-up comedian and not Trump himself.
That did not happen. Trump was re-elected partly because he did so well with the people who would ostensibly be offended and turned off by Hinchcliffe’s quip.
Hinchcliffe is probably more popular and successful now than ever before. He wasn’t canceled. He was the opposite of canceled. He was renewed, on the Alt-Right at least, or, as it is now known, the political mainstream.
In between “Grab ‘em by the pussy” and “There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” Trump, his followers, allies, and surrogates said and did lots of things that the media and the left thought would hurt him, his image, and his chances of winning re-election.
These include minor transgressions like, I dunno, getting impeached twice, getting convicted of thirty-four felonies, and unsuccessfully inciting an insurrection. You’d think that would hurt him with voters. You would be wrong.
Time and time again, we discovered an unfortunate truth about Trump and his cult: nobody fucking cares.
Trump spreads racist lies that Haitian immigrants are eating their neighbor’s pets? Nobody fucking cares.
Trump tells Democratic women of color to go back to the shithole countries they come from? Nobody fucking cares.
A jury finds Trump liable for the sexual abuse of E. Jean Carroll? Nobody fucking cares.
A man who posits himself as God’s choice to lead the free world gets caught paying hush money to an adult film actress he cheated on his wife with four months after she gave birth to his son Barron? Nobody fucking cares.
I’m writing this blog post because Elon Musk recently made headlines when he appeared to give a Nazi salute MULTIPLE times during a Trump rally.
The media, god bless them, treated this as a matter of some importance. Surely a close ally like Musk going full Nazi would hurt Trump, right? At the very least, it had to be bad for Musk’s reputation.
The truth of the matter is that sadly but predictably, NOBODY FUCKING CARES.
The media is making a big deal out of the wealthiest man in the world and one of the most powerful, doing a Hitler salute while supporting his best friend, Donald Trump.
I would love to live in a world where actions have consequences for Trump and his gang. I do not. I instead live in a world where NOBODY FUCKING CARES.
In a fun twist, the ADL defended Musk’s Hitler salute. Musk hates Muslims even more than Jews, which makes him an ally in their eyes.
Nobody fucking cares that Musk did what looks unmistakably like someone pledging allegiance to the Fourth Reich. Musk can do no wrong in his follower’s eyes. He could wear a Nazi uniform and grow a Hitler mustache, and they’d see it as a matter of owning the libs and trolling the easily offended.
That’s what Musk did when he tweeted, “Don’t say Hess to Nazi accusations. Some people will Goebbels anything down. Stop Goring your enemies! His pronouns would’ve been He/Himmler! Bet you did Nazi that coming!”
In case anyone missed that Musk was making Nazi puns, the tweet ended with the laughing crying emoji to let the world know that Musk finds his tweet so funny that he is crying with laughter.
This tweet offends me not because I’m Jewish and lost relatives in the Holocaust but rather on a comedic level.
It doesn’t matter what Trump or Musk do: their cultists will find a way to defend it. They’ll say that he wasn’t making a Hitler salute, just being awkward and autistic, and even if he did make a Hitler salute, he was just doing it to troll the left and own the libs, the two greatest motivations known to man.
You might argue that people most assuredly DO care and that some have left X in anger or spoken out against Musk. That fundamentally does not matter. The backlash won’t last long. In a month, Musk will still be the wealthiest man in the world and one of the most powerful, and his Hitler salute will be fuzzily remembered as one of many items in the “Controversy” part of Musk’s Wikipedia page.
The Hitler shit is not going to affect Musk’s popularity or power because NOBODY FUCKING CARES.
So the next time Trump, Musk, or Marjorie Taylor Greene do something indefensible and unforgivable, remember that NOBODY FUCKING CARES and that consequences only apply to those on the left.
That’s depressing as fuck, but not as dispiriting as expecting the horrible things Trump and his people do to have real-world ramifications, only to be disappointed again and again and again.
