I Hate Elon Musk So Much I'm Now Active on Threads
Elon Musk is one of those people who never really had any real political convictions until they decided to make politics the core of their public persona. He was ostensibly a Democrat and a centrist, but that seems to be largely because he thought electric car buyers and the models, actresses, and pop stars that he wanted to sleep with would be put off if he started rocking a red Make America Great Again red baseball hat and complaining about furriners invading our borders and poisoning our blood with their low IQs and sub-par DNA.
Musk’s hastily discarded left-of-center stance was all about perception. He thought it would be good for his image to be seen as an environmentalist who cared about people.
Like his hero Donald Trump, Musk is a petty little bitch who can’t handle criticism. If you’re on the left and you’re a billionaire, you’re the subject of constant, intense criticism about, well, everything.
But if you switch sides and become a red-pilled MAGA Republican, then you can do any damn thing you want, and as long as you talk about supporting Donald Trump, patriotism, and the importance of free speech, you will be lauded as a hero. See also Brand, Russell. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to suddenly come out as a devout Christian. They eat that shit up.
It doesn’t matter if your past is full of sexual assault or harassment allegations. It doesn’t matter if you’re racist, sexist, or full of hate. As long as you loudly and proudly profess allegiance to Donald Trump, the right will fucking love you.
The right fucking loves you if you come out as a conservative but Musk has nevertheless done everything in his power to endear himself to the far right and alienate his previous fanbase of electric car enthusiasts with irrational ideas about space travel.
Musk spent forty-four billion dollars on Twitter so that it could be a place where right-wing propaganda flourishes and his beloved Babylon Bee could make the same damn joke for the rest of eternity, without fear of getting de-platformed for being rabidly transphobic.
As the world’s richest man, Musk has an enormous fortune that he could use to make the world a better place. He could give tens of billions of dollars to worthy causes. He doesn’t do that. Most of his “philanthropy” has been disingenous and self-serving.
Musk is not known for giving money to charity. Instead he’s known for giving tens of millions of dollars to a billionaire who has vowed to cut taxes for people like him.
Instead of using his vast fortune to improve our lives, he’s used it to make them worse. He purchased Twitter. Seemingly overnight, it became a rancid sewer full of conspiracy theories, hate, and Musk’s own tweets, which are as toxic as they are plentiful.
I used to have a love-hate relationship with Twitter. I appreciated it for what it was and was perpetually frustrated by what it is not. That love-hate relationship morphed almost instantly into hate.
Musk ruined Twitter. Now he’s ruining the whole damn country.
The South African billionaire was already one of the most powerful men in the world because of his massive fortune. Then, he took additional steps to be EVEN MORE POWERFUL by buying the biggest, most important social media site as a digital soapbox for his rabid far-right political beliefs and becoming a close advisor to the president of the United States.
As an autistic man married to a South African woman and the father of two first-generation South African-American children, both autistic, I hate that Musk is the most famous South African and the most famous autistic person in the world.
But what I really hate is that Musk could become the world’s first trillionaire, and he’s using that money in a destructive and irresponsible way.
Because I hate Elon Musk so much, I’ve started posting regularly to Threads, Instagram’s Twitter clone.
It’s not bad! Many of the people I follow on Twitter are active on Threads. In terms of functionality, it is a lot like Twitter, so it feels familiar even if you’re new.
Unfortunately, I am not off Twitter. I can’t afford to be. It’s still a major traffic driver to my various professional endeavors, all of which need as much help as possible.
I still get something out of posting on Twitter, even if it would benefit me tremendously emotionally to never waste time on that hell site again.
When I got my dental implants, I went from being a nightly drinker and pot smoker to not drinking or smoking pot, ever. It was a breeze compared to getting off Twitter.
That is some addictive shit. I just can’t quit it just yet, but I am relieved that there is at least one alternative that’s not perfect or ideal by any stretch of the imagination, but that is good enough.
Threads isn’t great, but it’s good enough for now.
The best part of Threads? No Elon Musk and all of the other blue-checked MAGA morons that I desperately want to avoid. It’s not as gross and toxic as the other place.
So I invite you to follow me on Threads. I’m Nathan Rabin there. I also invite you to make the switch from Twitter to Threads even if I haven’t found the testicular fortitude to do so completely at this point.
Come on in, the water’s fine and there are considerably fewer Nazis than at the other place.

Nathan needed expensive, life-saving dental implants, and his dental plan doesn’t cover them, so he started a GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-nathans-journey-to-dental-implants. Give if you can!
