Unlike John Fetterman, I Understand That You Can Root Against Donald Trump Without Rooting Against the Country

As part of his distressingly successful attempt to make progressives like myself feel guilty about supporting him, John Fetterman joined Truth Social, Donald Trump’s rancid sewer of a social media site, to whine about how unfair it is that Donald Trump was convicted of felonies just because he committed a bunch of crimes.

He praised Trump’s “undeniable” “singular political talent.”

“If you’re rooting against the president, you are rooting against the nation. And I’m not ever going to be where I want a president to fail. So, country first,” Fetterman told ABC News.

Here’s the thing. I don’t want Donald Trump to succeed, but I don’t want the country to fail.

I’m rooting against the president, but I am not rooting against the country because Donald Trump’s conception of success is my definition of failure.

I don’t want the economy to crater or inflation to rise, but I also don’t want a world where the thirteen billionaires Trump nominated for his cabinet become even richer and more powerful while the poor continue to struggle. If Trump gets his way, there is a roughly one hundred percent chance of that happening.

If Fetterman thinks that Trump cares about the working man, then he is not only deluded but insane.

For Trump, succeeding involves single-handedly eliminating the tremendous progress the trans community has made over the past two decades. He told a group of young Republicans, "I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools.”

He also vowed to “keep men out of women's sports” and said that  "it will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”

Trump wants mass deportations, no matter how much they cost.  He’s vowed to implement “the largest deportation operation in American history.”

He wants to destroy the social safety net and make life harder for those on the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder.

The Ghosts Can’t Do It cast member wants to buy Greenland, whether Denmark is willing to sell it or not. He wants to take over the Panama Canal because he does not understand diplomacy or international relations.

The forty-seventh president will continue to support the genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, something that Fetterman also supports.

Trump’s idea of success entails scapegoating non-documented immigrants, downplaying, if not outright denying the violence and bigotry of the Alt-Right while presenting Antifa and Black Lives Matter as insane, anti-white hate groups guilty of unimaginable, inconceivable violence.

The former reality show host wants to weaponize the government to go after people he considers his enemies, like Liz Cheney, E. Jean Carroll, and Adam Schiff.

He’s intent on using the court system to punish people who displease him. In a move that would be bizarre and inconceivable from anyone other than Donald Trump, he sued renowned pollster J. Ann Selzer, her polling firm, The Des Moines Register, and its parent company, Gannett.

Selzer’s crime? She released the results of a poll that said that Harris had a surprising lead in Iowa. Harris lost Iowa, but it’s not illegal to be wrong. Trump feels strongly otherwise.

The Little Rascals actor will undoubtedly lose, but that won’t keep him from filing other nuisance lawsuits to intimidate and silence his critics.

I hope that Trump fails at everything that I’ve mentioned. Trump’s idea of succeeding as president and my idea of presidential success aren’t just different; they’re antithetical. What Trump sees as a utopia, I see as a dystopia.

Trump wants to pardon the terrorists who invaded the Capitol on January 6th in a doomed attempt to prevent the ratification of Joe Biden as president.

When I think about Fetterman, I’m reminded of the gif of Tyra Banks shouting, “I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!"

What a fucking chucklehead. I liked the guy because he seemed like an authentic voice of the working class and dressed like me, but he has proven a colossal disappointment.

Fetterman makes it sound like if he could just have a beer with Trump or, given the president’s “sobriety,” share a baggie of crushed-up Adderall and talk things out, they’d realize that they’re both patriots who want the best for our nation but just have different ways of thinking.

If Fetterman thinks he can win over MAGA by sucking up to Trump and his cultists he should probably think about how Kamala Harris aggressively campaigned with Liz Cheney and bragged in the debate about being a gun owner. That did not help her.

Harris isn’t perfect, but a lot of the hatred she received was rooted in sexism and racism.

Since I wrote this blog post, Fetterman has met with Trump at Mar-A-Lago. Trump was impressed. He gushed about Fetterman and his wife. Fetterman might think this is a win-win proposition for the people of Pennsylvania. Trump is indeed less likely to punish Fetterman’s constituents since the lumbering oaf was considerate enough to come to Mar-A-Lago and kiss the ring of supreme power, but Fetterman’s actions sane-wash Trump by making him seem far more reasonable and bipartisan than he is. Trump doesn’t want to reach across the aisle. He doesn’t want to work with Democrats. He does not see them as distinguished competition; he sees them as evil, insane, America-hating monsters who must be punished.

But not Fetterman! He’s one of the good ones. Trump likes him. He can sleep soundly, knowing he’s won the approval of the worst man in the world.

Fetterman doesn’t understand that our fierce cultural and political divide is not a mere matter of differing ideas about governance; it’s hatred. The MAGA mob HATES Fetterman, just as they hate Kamala Harris. They’ve been cruel and personal and unhinged in their attacks on Fetterman. They’ve made fun of how he looks and dresses. They’ve depicted him as a mutant, moron and monster. If he thinks their minds can be changed with positivity and open-mindedness, he’s wrong.

Wanting to find common ground with people who revile you because of how you look, your race, or your gender isn’t gracious or compassionate; it’s masochistic.
